When first embarking on a freelance writing career, every freelance writer has questions about what the industry is like and where they fit in it.  I’ve taken the time to put together a few questions that will definitely answer this for you and give you a clearer view on what the Freelance Life is like.

Do I Need to Have a Writing Education?

The answer to this is no.  You really do not need to have a formal writing education to freelance. Now, some freelancers do have a background in writing. They may have taken up writing in college or even taken some classes in high school.  If you already have a background in writing, that’s really great but you can learn what you need to be a successful freelance writer through reading, writing, or taking an informal course.  Your clients honestly will not care about that degree from the prestigious school. They only care if you can write for them and do an amazing job at it, plain and simple.

Do I Need to Have Writing Experience?

I would have to say that the answer to this is no as well.  Here’s the thing, much like a writing education, you don’t need to have formal writing experience.  We all have experience writing, so don’t worry about that.  In fact, a lot of the informal writing we do is actually an asset for some types of work, especially projects where you need to sound conversational.   The next part of this is that when you decide you want to start freelancing, you can create samples to submit with the project you pitch.  That way you start creating ideal work for each project.  As you keep getting work, your portfolio will grow, so don’t let this stop you.

Do I Have to Write for Magazines and Newspapers?

This is absolutely up to you.  There are lots of different opportunities for freelance writers where you  don’t ever have to write for a Magazine or Newspaper if you don’t want to.  To truly know if this is for you, I would suggest giving it a try.  You may discover you love it and this is the only type of writing you want to do, or that you hate it and would much rather write blogs, be a technical writer, or write sales copy.  There’s a vast number of fields that you can explore.  The more work you do, you’ll start to figure out what type of freelance writing you really enjoy.

How Can I Learn More About Writing and Improve My Skills?

The only way that you will ever improve your writing skills is to simply write.  After reading, researching, and taking courses, you have to apply that information.  Writing makes you a better writer.  The more you write, the better you will be at figuring out what works best for you. All the technical parts of writing don’t stick until you actually start applying them.  A community is also a great way to get better.   Getting critiqued and constructive criticism from other writers is a great way to improve your skills. Other people can see things our own eyes miss.

How Do I Get Started and Position Myself?

Positioning yourself as a freelance writer is important and the best way to accomplish this is to pick a specialty.  Do some research and find an industry or writing style that you want to be a part of.  From there you really need to study what works for the industry you choose and what writing styles are the most popular.   You can specialize in a writing format or a particular industry.  No matter what you pick, you need to be a student and learn all that you can so that you can excel in it.

God's Faithfulness: A Gift We Don't Deserve

God's Faithfulness: A Gift We Don't Deserve

God and faithfulness go hand and hand, much like so many of the other amazing attributes of our Heavenly Father. It is definitely something that we don't deserve. It's not something we even have to work for, because our Father is just that good.  Many of us might question that, and want to know what they have to do to earn God's faithfulness.   It’s not something unrealistic like we might think.  It is the exact same thing that was required of the children of Israel. I'm, sure you're asking, what was required of the Children of Israel?

5 Things that made me start loving my life and stop wanting everyone else's (plus a free workbook)

It is really easy at times to get caught up in status and where we feel we should be in life.  I know that feeling all too well.  I didn’t really plan to take the path that I’ve taken in life.  In my head  I had it all planned out a totally different way.  I used to really worry about where I felt I should be rather than focusing on where I was at that moment.  When you get in that mind frame it’s really easy to look at other people’s lives and compare them to your own.  This isn't the way to get that happy life we're all searching for. It’s so easy to look at what your peers are doing and feel like you should be doing the same or something comparable.
